Analyst Q&A 2
Advertising outlook and AI effect on eCPM
Q (Timothy Zhao · Goldman Sachs): Analyst asked for management’s expectations for advertising revenue in the second half, trends across different subsectors, updates on ad strategy, and how AI has changed eCPM and other ad metrics.
A: They said Q2 saw strength in automotive and food & beverages but many other verticals faced pressure as advertisers cut budgets. Automotive momentum from new product launches could continue into H2; software/apps likely flat; handset is weak in Q3 with possible improvement in Q4; e-commerce and food delivery are uncertain. They noted eCPM rose quarter-by-quarter but that did not automatically mean ad revenue grew because of prior ad product restructuring and reduced low-quality ad exposure; they are shifting toward KOL/celebrity and content-based marketing to attract budgets between 5 million and 20 million and to improve the sales rate of core ad resources.
"So Weibo is actually a very strong platform in doing the advertisement for the new product launches and new product availability." — Sandra Zhang
User engagement trends and AI initiatives update
Q (Yicheng Yuan · UBS): Analyst asked for an update on user growth and engagement (content consumption, time spent, frequency) and progress on digitalization and AI initiatives and focus areas for H2.
A: They said core users are spending more time and interacting more, but low-frequency users remain weak. A drop in pre-installed apps reduced new-user attraction and had around 10% impact to the business. Video time and consumption grew double-digit; there are about 10,000 video creators with roughly 70% retention and creator incentives show ROI of about 70% to 100%; this hurts gross margin short term but should help long term. Intelligent Search showed year-on-year improvement but quarter weakness; they upgraded LLM capabilities in Q1 and are shifting search to interactive Q&A. AI also improved R&D efficiency in some areas and helped Super Topics reach historical high activity.
"In terms of the number of those video content creators at the [ current account ] at current stage, it is amounting to around 10,000 of them." — Gaofei Wang (CEO)
