Analyst Q&A 10
Shift to higher-value subscribers
Q (Sebastiano Petti · JPMorgan): Why pivot now from deep discounts to higher lifetime value subscribers? Also, what subscriber number should we anchor to—flat year-over-year or down 300,000?
A: Management said the two-year strategy is working and they are focused on building a higher-quality, more durable subscription business. They expect self-pay net adds to be in line with last year (last year down about 300,000) and define success as stable to slightly improving subscription revenue for the year.
"Success is that we have stable to slightly improving subscription revenue overall, and this is the first year we will achieve that in four years." — Jennifer Witz (CEO)
Companion program contribution in Q4
Q (Bryan Kraft · Deutsche Bank): Will Companion subscriptions contribute in the fourth quarter and beyond? Also, on YouTube, will the partnership lift CPMs or bring new advertisers and interest from other audio services?
A: They said they still expect a contribution from Companion in the fourth quarter and into next year, and there are opportunities to expand the program. They also said Continuous Service had a meaningful contribution last year but will have less impact this fourth quarter.
"we do still expect a contribution from companion in the fourth quarter and into next year" — Jennifer Witz (CEO)
YouTube ad partnership benefits
Q (Scott Walker): Will the YouTube partnership increase audience reach, improve sell-through and pricing, and bring new advertisers? Are advertisers testing and how long to see scale?
A: Management said they view YouTube as an aggregated audience play across Pandora, SoundCloud and podcasts. Early campaigns show incremental reach up to 90%+, which can tap new advertisers and bring more sell-through and pricing opportunity, but advertisers are mostly in test-and-learn mode and the ramp is expected into H2 next year.
Extended duration and churn impact
Q (Steven Cahall · Wells Fargo): What is happening at the top of the funnel and how will churn trend? Also, how much do auto dealer extended-duration plans contribute to 2026 self-pay net adds and how engaged are those customers?
A: They said the Extended Duration Program (EDP) drives stronger engagement versus a typical three-month trial, with more active customers per car and deeper OEM and dealer relationships. Companion shows up in both in-car and streaming ads and drives incremental demand and retention; they are expanding new funnels outside the in-car trial and see low churn improving as they use 360L data to reduce friction.
"Ultimately, we are building stronger engagement across a broader set of customers through that program, and it has been very helpful in terms of not just leveraging, but also building and deepening our relationships with automakers and dealers." — Jennifer Witz (CEO)
Spectrum value and testing deals
Q (Barton Crockett · Rosenblatt): Given industry moves and direct-to-device talk, could there be early testing deals ahead of broader technology commitments? Also, should we read the Q4 subscriber path as a guide to next year?
A: They said Q4 does not indicate a different long-term trend; they focus on building a healthier subscriber base and subscription revenue rather than quarter-to-quarter subscriber counts. On Spectrum, they view recent technology, transactions and regulatory developments as reinforcing the value of their Spectrum as a scarce strategic asset, have done technical work on interference, and remain open to a range of alternatives while discussions continue.
"That combined with more recent increases in industry transactions and just commentary as you mentioned, and regulatory developments all help reinforce the value of Spectrum and particularly our Spectrum as a scarce strategic asset." — Jennifer Witz (CEO)
AI agents and programming costs
Q (Cameron Mansson-Perrone · Morgan Stanley): How do you expect AI agents to affect subscriptions and cancellations going forward? And how sustainable are this year's programming expense savings?
A: They said they have delivered $96 million of the $100 million gross cost savings target through three quarters, coming from programming, customer service, marketing and G&A, and they believe these are structural savings. On AI agents, they see no meaningful increase in cancel demand so far, already handle a significant percentage of chat and voice interactions with AI (through Sierra), and view automated interactions as generating higher CSAT and lower cost.
"We have delivered $96 million, so essentially all of that through three quarters of the year." — Zac Coughlin (CFO)
Advertising weakness despite more listening
Q (Jessica Reif Ehrlich · BofA): Listening was up but advertising was down; why? For Q4, what is driving implied margin contraction? Also, what revenue and EBITDA should we expect from the YouTube deal and what milestones show the ramp is on track?
A: They said YouTube discussions are early and budgets for 2027 are not fixed; holding companies are testing and there is runway into 2027. For advertising, total advertising was stable year-over-year with Sirius XM-specific ad revenue a small part; Q4 ad signals look encouraging, but the most impactful headwind to the implied Q4 outlook is equipment revenue tied to memory costs, and they plan some targeted marketing investment to build momentum into 2027.
"Inside of the rest of revenue, though, we do expect to see growing headwinds from equipment revenue tied to memory costs." — Zac Coughlin (CFO)
How Companion plans expand
Q (Jason Bazinet · Citi): How are you expanding Companion plans today and how might that change over the next few years? What could alter the approach?
A: They said loyal full-price customers are using Companion to add cars or streaming logins for household members and they can provide extra streaming logins to some high-value households. The program has performed beyond expectations, there is more to do, and they are watching cannibalization (not material today); ARPU remained about $15.18, helped by rate increases and improved discount mix but offset somewhat by Companion and more affordable offerings.
"If you add another one, that is an incremental subscriber, and we could provide another one or two to some of our most valuable households." — Jennifer Witz (CEO)
Why be measured on ad growth now
Q (David Joyce · Seaport Global): Is the cautious ad outlook due to backend tech work for YouTube, 360L development, or adding premium podcast inventory?
A: They said the in-car opportunity remains and can be a focus next year, but YouTube is the main priority to open targeted advertising. They noted encouraging early bookings, programmatic and podcast growth, added podcast supply and new short-form products, but are refining the YouTube offering to meet advertiser expectations on targeting and measurement; category caution and political-cycle volatility also temper near-term outlook.
"Programmatic continues to grow. Podcasting continues to grow year-over-year, as well." — Scott Walker
Leverage and buyback pace next year
Q (Stephen Laszczyk · Goldman Sachs): Can you discuss the opportunity to accelerate share repurchases next year and factors that will govern the buyback pace?
A: They said reaching their target leverage range last quarter is an important milestone that gives flexibility to deploy substantial free cash flow. Priorities remain investing in the business, staying in a low-to-mid 3x leverage range, keeping the dividend, and increasingly directing capital to share repurchases opportunistically, with an expectation of meaningful increases starting next year.
"we believe that will point towards meaningful increases compared to what we have done over the last couple of years, starting next year." — Zac Coughlin (CFO)
