Analyst Q&A 4
EBITDA margin and share gains
Q (Brandon Vazquez · William Blair): Analyst asked to clarify the EBITDA margin guide and whether first half margins match Q1, implying a weaker Q2. He also asked if Neogen is already taking share and where competitive wins are coming from.
A: Management said the first half (or second quarter) will be in line with Q1 and full-year margins should be roughly similar to fiscal year '26, noting some first-half investments were a headwind and some margin improvements are back-half weighted. They said the commercial team reorganized global strategic accounts to one accountable person per customer, and they are seeing early evidence of success with 6.2% growth in Q1, which puts them on a path to do better than 8% on the year.
"And so we're starting to see some early evidence that that's working, 6.2% growth in Q1." — Joe Freels
Growth drivers and manufacturing move
Q (Subhalaxmi Nambi · Guggenheim): Analyst asked what growth assumptions and drivers support continued high-single-digit growth in indicator testing and bacteria sanitation. He also asked how Neogen will manage inventory and the Petrifilm transition with 3M.
A: Management said the commercial operating model gives greater focus on the right segments and new KPI reviews are creating a more rigorous rhythm to drive growth in those product lines. On Petrifilm and inventory, they said they revamped how they manage inventory and listed 4 gating items for the transition: customer continuity, safety stock, supplier management, and disciplined sequencing across the 17 SKUs, which they will monitor SKU by SKU.
"With regards to Petrifilm transition, there's really 4 gating items that we are mindful of as we move forward." — Mikhael Nassif (CEO)
Duplication costs, margins, and partnerships
Q (Bob Labick · CJS): Analyst asked how long duplicative costs will run, when margins will improve, what remaining wildcards exist for SKU transitions, and details on the Hinalea Imaging partnership and its funding.
A: Management said duplicative costs should peak and then subside as the transition completes. They expect that after they transition through fiscal year '28 they will begin operational improvements and "expect to see margin improvement, 200 to 300 basis points in the FY '29," and they said Petrifilm is their #1 priority with mitigations to avoid customer or financial impact. On partnerships, they said technology licensing like Hinalea is a path for innovation, describing hyperspectral sensors that "can capture almost 100 or more" bands to build a detailed fingerprint and simplify downstream testing, and they will demo a camera at Investor Day.
"we would expect to see margin improvement, 200 to 300 basis points in the FY '29." — R. Riggsbee (CFO)
Asia growth and sales model changes
Q (Piper Sandler): Analyst asked what end-customer demand looked like in Asia Pacific and which customer segments offer the best growth. He also asked what early signs show the new sales model and KPIs are improving coverage and productivity.
A: Management said they focus across ready-to-eat, dairy, protein and that growth is about building share of wallet in existing markets rather than creating new ones. On the sales model, they said this is the fifth consecutive quarter of core growth, the model focuses on bringing value to customers rather than just supplying products, and KPI reviews give real-time visibility and accountability so the team can resolve issues in real time.
"it's really about how do we focus more upon bringing value to our customers and the things that are strategically important to them versus just simply being a product supplier." — Joe Freels
