Analyst Q&A 3
CLO market stability and AI loans
Q (Gaurav Mehta · Alliance Global Partners): The analyst asked for more detail on signs of stabilization in the CLO market and whether those trends are sustainable for second half of 2026. He also asked how much volume is coming from new data center/GPU AI build-out loans and whether they target those for the portfolio.
A: Management said they see signs of stabilization that look sustainable and that some loan trading over par suggests further repricing. They are seeing more amend-and-extend activity adding spread, plus newer data center and GPU loans that are spread additive. On AI build-out loans, it is early days but between 5 and 10 transactions have come into the loan market in the last four months and they expect the trend to continue.
"So yes, I think there is some signs of stabilization that looks sustainable to us." — Lauren Basmadjian (CHAIR)
Portfolio size and primary vs secondary market
Q (Erik Zwick · Lucid): He asked how the pipeline looks between primary market issuance and secondary relative trading value, and whether portfolio size could grow again. He also asked if CLOs with reinvestment end dates are candidates for resets/refis and how they plan to increase NII to cover dividend and expenses.
A: Management said the decline in portfolio value is mainly from lower valuations due to spread compression, not lack of opportunities, and they see more attractive opportunities in the secondary market versus primary. The secondary market is robust and they continue to trade CLO equity daily; the fund is not raising capital and is at the higher end of its leverage target, so they are focused on optimizing the portfolio and rotated around $12 million into higher quality or higher yielding investments. They review every holding for refis and resets and said the 2 or 3 CLOs with reinvestment periods ending this year are high targets; core NII is recurring quarterly cash flows minus expenses, GAAP yield has declined but may be at an inflection, and they will rotate into CLOs with GAAP yield of low to mid-teens.
"I think we're seeing more attractive opportunities in the secondary versus primary." — Nishil Mehta (PRESIDENT)
Diversification and one real estate asset
Q (Timothy D'Agostino · B. Riley): He asked whether CCIF examines other private credit strategies beyond CLO equity or will remain CLO equity-focused. He also asked for an update or plans for the one real estate asset they still hold.
A: Management said Carlyle considers other credit strategies and may opportunistically diversify if the risk-adjusted return is attractive, but the fund will ultimately retain its focus on CLO equity. On the real estate asset, they said the market is moving slower than expected, they are working with a partner to maximize value, it is slow-moving, and they remain focused on exiting the position.
"But I think ultimately, the fund will retain its focus on CLO equity." — Nishil Mehta (PRESIDENT)
