Sep 16, 2026 earnings call — Transition to commercialization of AI datacom photonics
Announced a letter of intent for up to $30 million CHIPS funding to accelerate commercialization of scalable photonics for AI datacom.
Revenue $0.0B (est $0.0B) · EPS $-0.15 (est $-0.07)
Key quotes
"As the AI datacom market accelerates and demand grows over the next several years, we have prioritized our resources on the commercialization of our high-speed photodetectors to capture this opportunity."
"While the terms are not yet final, our current understanding is that if finalized, this award is likely to be accounted for as an equity investment in Aeluma by the U.S. government and not as revenue like our previous government R&D contracts."
"I'm happy to announce that we recently executed an important agreement with Sumitomo Chemical Advanced Technologies to strengthen our relationship, increase wafer production capacity, leveraging existing MOCVD tools that we can run our processes on and provide a path for further increasing capacity in the future."
Analyst Q&A 3
Revenue timing and market focus
Q (Danial Yermakhan · Freedom Broker): He asked if last quarter's revenue shortfall will carry into fiscal 2027. He also asked whether the near-term focus is AI/datacenter or mobile/electronics.
A: Management would not give official guidance for the year and said booked revenue, including new contracts signed this year, is about $2.3 million and could have upside. They said they continue to deliver on signed projects and that AI datacom is the near-term commercialization focus, though they remain active in other markets.
"AI datacom as a market is really at the forefront for us right now and for the entire industry." — Jonathan Klamkin (CEO)
NRE deals, lasers vs detectors, OpEx/CapEx
Q (Richard Shannon · Craig-Hallum): He asked whether the NRE contracts are all in the datacom market and how advanced and urgent those discussions are. He also asked about the balance between photodetectors and quantum dot lasers and whether recent OpEx and CapEx are one-time or ongoing.
A: They said the NRE discussions are almost entirely in the AI datacom market and are driven by supply-chain constraints and large expected market growth, so customers are initiating NRE programs now. For products, both photodetectors and lasers are very significant, they cannot precisely quantify, and they are investing in both rather than choosing one. On costs, OpEx rose with hiring and a Q4 bump from full-quarter salaries and year-end accruals and is expected to drift up modestly; CapEx this year is primarily for two MOCVD reactors and should be thought of as a onetime item to help scale.
"So I wouldn't say one outweighs the other, at least not today." — Jonathan Klamkin (CEO)
CHIPS funding and NPO/CPO demand impact
Q (Sujeeva De Silva · ROTH Capital): She asked how the $30 million CHIPS funding will be used and whether the government will take an equity stake. She also asked if the move from pluggables to NPO/CPO creates more demand and specific opportunities.
A: They said the CHIPS funding is likely not accounted as revenue and would likely look like an equity investment from the U.S. government, and that the capital will accelerate commercialization mainly supporting high-speed photodetectors. On architectures, they said demand exists for pluggables, NPO and some CPO, and the transition creates additional opportunities because new formats often require customized components, wafer-scale integration, and advanced packaging; quantum dot lasers also offer package and reliability advantages that interest customers.
"The main point there was it's not likely to be accounted as revenue." — Christopher Stewart (CFO)
